Skittles science :O

The year 8's were learning about white light and how we see colour.
We thought that this skittles trick goes well with the topic and that it would be quite cool to do.

You can try it yourself at home!
Arrange skittles in a circle on a plate, slowly pour hot water in the center and vuala!

Have fun and let me know how it goes:)

BTW How do we see colour with our eyes? Can anyone explain?

  1. Skittles are made of ingredients that are prone to dissolve in water. They also do it quickly, so you have neat science right away.

  2. This is how we see colours when any light recourse hits the object we are looking at, it reflects the same image in our eyes using colours and colours are made using white light and so when white light hits a prism it can make 7 different colours like Red,Orange,Yellow,Green,Blue,Indigo,Violet. Red is bent the least when violet is bent the most. What makes us see is our eyes and in our eyes we have the Cornea and the cornea sees through skin that covers the eye and focuses light.Iris the Iris controls the amount of light that enters the eye,it is the colored part of the eye.Retina the Retina forms the image upside down but your brain flips it the right way up and it is made up of 2 cells.(Rods-allow you to see black and white).(cones-allow you to see colours). The rainbow in science is called the spectrum. The white light refracts as it goes through a prism and all the colours in the visible spectrum are dispersed. The spreading out of the seven colours is called dispersion. Light light travels in strait
lines.Light bounces off evenly off smooth surfaces such as mirrors.
